The Diagnostician is an implementation of model-based reasoning: a diagnostic model of a system or item, derived from design data, serves as the basis for diagnostic reasoning. The diagnostic model is a software object that is used by the reasoning algorithms to correlate test and sensor data to possible faults with the system. The object-oriented nature is a dramatic departure from traditional fault trees, and allows for very powerful and flexible run-time diagnostic systems.
